A picture is worth a thousand words

Code-switching (as a functional mechanism for recreating a sense of a border home)

The movie I chose to represent this type of CS is “ The Terminal” The film is about a man who becomes stuck in New York's John F. Kennedy Airport terminal when he is denied entry into the United States and at the same time cannot return to his native country because of a military coup. He feels completely lost because he does not understand English, at the end of the movie he he gets in a taxi, telling the driver, "I am going home."
Viktor Navorski: please!!! televisor, please!! televisor. ( he tries to catch someone's attention to identify what is in the news, he wants someone to help him to understand English.)

Now he is is stuck there and the airport becomes his home, despite this fact he helps other people to solve different problems and do friends within the building. In conclusion, he was living in the border for some time and started to acquire the new language to communicate his ideas, he started to feel better although that was not his “home”)

Code-switching (as a cultural method for inscribing alterity)

I have chosen two short clips from the movie “Puss in Boots” and “Puss in Boots and The Three Diablos” as an example of how CS is used to mixed two or more cultures, and how people could take advantage of this instead of creating a division between cultures, countries, thoughts or religion beliefs.  In the movie we will see that it does not matter who you are or where you come from, we will learn that  union means strength.

Puss in Boots and The Three Diablos: The short tells a story of Puss in Boots on a mission to recover a princess' stolen ruby from the notorious French thief the Whisperer. Reluctantly accompanied by three cute little kittens called the Three Diablos, Puss must tame them before they endanger the mission.

Puss in boots: your tears are payment enough.
The Queen: grazie!! grazie!!(they speak in English and Spanish but also in Italian because this piece of literature has an Italian origin)

Puss in boots: Gracias, my little friends, for you have shown me there is glory, and sometimes gold, in doing the right thing.

Puss in Boots: Accompanied by his friends, Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws, Puss is pitted against Jack and Jill, two murderous outlaws in ownership of legendary magical beans which lead to great fortune.Puss' efforts to save San Ricardo make him a hero among the townspeople and Imelda. In the epilogue, Jack and Jill are recovering from their injuries, Humpty is shown once again in his regular egg form, wearing a golden egg suit, as he rides the Great Terror into the clouds, and Puss and Kitty kiss.
Puss in Boots example of multiple identities: Through the years I have been known by many names. Diablo Gato, The Furry Lover, Chupa Cabra, Frisky Two Times and then The Gingerhead man. But to most I am Puss in Boots, outlaw!

Puss in Boots: Those magic beans were my score. You just caused me a chance of getting the golden eggs, mi amigo. Put up your paws up.

Code-switching (as a structural strategy for indexing multiple border identities)

Example: I have found a clear example in which CS- as a structural strategy for indexing multiple identities as well as alternity are used. The song is entitled  “AMERICANO” and it was written and sung by Lady Gaga; in the song she uses both of the CS to express her disagreement with US laws  which have been used against immigrants and same-sex marriage, the song combines mariachi, house and techno genres with elements from latin music. In an interview Lady Gaga revealed: “The immigration law was passed in Arizona, houses were being raided for immigrants, some of whom had been here for 20 years. America was once the land of the free, and now [they're] telling everyone to get the fuck out.”She continued by saying, "I don’t stand by many of those unjust immigration laws in my country." Besides, she uses social networks to say that this song is her “American Dream”
Examples of CS used in the lyric of the song:

insertion
“I met a girl in east L.A.
In floral shorts as sweet as May
She sang in 8 in two barrio chords
We fell in love, but not in court”

alternation
“Mis canciones son de la re-revolución
Mi corazón me duele por mi generación
If you love me we can marry on the west coast
On a Wednesday en el verano en agosto”
